What Types of Washing Machines Are There? A Handy Guide

Whether you’re a first-time washing machine buyer or looking for a replacement, the number of options available can make it a difficult decision. Here, we look at the different types of washing machines to help you to make the right choice for you.

Freestanding

Freestanding washing machines are those that can be easily moved around and simply require a power source and connection to a drain to be able to work. This type of washing machine is a popular option as you can choose from a range of models, drum sizes, and even colours!

Integrated

Integrated washing machines are those that seamlessly fit into a kitchen cupboard so that they can be hidden when not in use.

Integrated appliances have become more popular as people seek out a sleek look for their kitchens, but there are limited options available and they’re often more expensive than freestanding machines too.

Cold fill

A cold fill washing machine heats the water in the machine rather than using hot water from your boiler. This makes them a more efficient option as they only heat the water that they use rather than using excess amounts of pre-heated water.

You’ll typically find that all modern washing machines are cold fill as they’re preferred by manufacturers due to being cheaper to make.

Front loading

Most UK washing machines are front loading, which is where you load clothes through a door in the front of the machine. The other option is a top loading machine which has a door at the top – often seen in American homes.

One benefit of a front-loading machine is that you can stack two machines, or a washing machine and a tumble dryer, on top of each other. This is a great space-saving option but you must ensure that they’re secure.

Washer-Dryer

A washer-dryer combines both washing machine and tumble dryer functions, creating another fantastic space-saving option. Buying a washer-dryer can be cheaper than buying two separate machines too, but it can be tricky to find one that performs both washing and drying functions really well.

If you need help maintaining your washing machine, contact the CB Domestics team today to discuss your requirements.

5 Common Reasons Why Your Oven isn’t Working

It’s very frustrating when you’re trying to cook and realise that your oven isn’t working. Here, we share five common issues with electric ovens and what could be causing these.

Oven isn’t switching on

There are a number of reasons why your oven might not be switching on. Firstly, check to make sure that no features of your oven are on, including lights and timers, as if some elements are working there’s a different issue causing the problem.

If your oven is plugged into a socket, it could be that the fuse has blown or that the electricity in your home has been interrupted during the day and needs resetting.

Oven isn’t heating up

If some parts of your oven are working but it’s not heating up, this is typically caused by one of two problems: damage to the element or a blown thermal fuse. If the element has been damaged, you will need to replace this.

The same is true if the thermal fuse has blown, you will need to get a new one before your oven will heat up again.

Oven heat keeps cutting out

When your oven cuts out when in use, it could be an issue with the thermostat sensor. This sensor monitors the oven temperature and helps to control keeping it at the temperature you’ve set it to.

If this is faulty, ovens tend to overheat and then cut out. You may also find that this issue prevents your oven from working at all.

Oven isn’t cooking evenly

When cooking, there’s nothing more annoying than when food isn’t cooked evenly due to a faulty oven. This issue is often caused by a faulty bake or broil element. The bake element is located at the bottom of the oven and the broil element is at the top.

If either is failing to glow red or looks broken, they will need replacing. If you have a fan oven, a faulty fan could also be causing food to not cook evenly. Listen out for signs that it’s getting louder or appears to be going slower, if so, you’ll need to have this replaced.

Oven door won’t shut properly

Your oven can’t work effectively if the door won’t shut properly, so if you find that you’re experiencing this issue you should try to resolve it quickly.

Check the hinges to see if there are signs of wear or breakage, and ensure that they’re still aligned correctly. If they look as they should, check the door seals. These can become loose over time which will mean that the door won’t shut properly.

Do you need help with your oven? Contact the CB Domestics team to book your repair today.

A Guide to Washing Machine Temperature Settings

Ever wondered which washing machine temperature setting you should be using? Here, we share what each temperature setting does and when it should be used to ensure that your clothes are always in the best condition.

Why is choosing the right temperature important?

It's essential to choose the right washing machine temperature setting as using the wrong one could mean that your clothes are left unclean or damaged.

It’s also important to consider how much energy each setting uses, as choosing a hotter setting than necessary can cost you more than it needs to.

When to wash clothes on a hot setting

Your washing machine’s hot setting is ideal for heavily soiled or stained clothes. It can also help to sanitise items and remove allergens. This makes it a good choice for towels and bedding, or items worn by family members that suffer from allergies.

However, running your washing machine on a hot setting will cost more and won’t necessarily make your clothes any cleaner than a 40° wash.

Hot washes can also shrink certain fabric types like denim and cotton, so always check clothing lables to see what temperature is safe.

When to wash clothes on a warm setting

A warm washing machine setting of 40° is perfect for clothes that are lightly soiled. A warm setting is also best for clothes made from synthetic materials, such as cotton and denim, as it will ensure that they stay looking their best.

Using your washing machine’s warm setting is more energy efficient than its hot setting, but it’s less effective at removing tough stains.

When to wash clothes on a cold setting

If your clothes aren’t dirty and just need freshening up, choosing a cold washing machine setting will produce the results you’re looking for at a lower cost.

Washing your clothes at 20 or 30° will save you money and is more eco-friendly than using a hot washing machine setting. It’s usually recommended that delicate materials, such as wool and silk, are washed at a low temperature too.

Need a new, more energy-efficient appliance? Contact CB Domestics to discuss your requirements.

If you’re looking to buy a new fridge freezer, you might be wondering whether it’s best to choose a combined option or two separate appliances. Here, we share the pros and cons of both to help you to make the right choice for your home.

Separate fridge freezer pros and cons

The biggest benefit of having a separate fridge and freezer is that you’ll have more storage space for your fresh and frozen food. This is ideal for larger families or those who need lots of storage space for their food.

One of the most significant drawbacks of a separate fridge and freezer is that they will take up more space - you'll need to find room for two appliances rather than one. If you have a large kitchen or utility area, this won’t be an issue, but people with smaller properties may struggle to find space.

To navigate the space issue, some people choose to keep their freezer in a garage or outhouse.

Opting for a separate fridge and freezer can also be less cost-effective than a combined option - both when buying them to begin with and their running costs. Two appliances use more energy to run than one, so this is something else that needs to be considered - especially with the current price of energy.

Combined fridge freezer pros and cons

A combined fridge freezer is more cost-effective than a separate fridge and freezer, making it a better choice for those looking to cut their energy bills. They are also usually cheaper to buy, although some American-style appliances can be expensive. However, there are options to suit every budget.

You’ll also need less space for a combined fridge freezer than for separate appliances, which makes it the best choice for more compact homes.

The biggest issue with a combined fridge freezer is that there could be limited space, especially if you like to store lots of fresh and frozen items. However, couples and smaller families will typically find that combined fridge freezers offer enough capacity, especially if they choose a large, American-style option.

Need a new fridge freezer? Contact the CB Domestics team today to discuss your requirements.

Tips to Run Your Fridge Freezer More Efficiently

With household bills ever-increasing, you’re most likely looking for ways to reduce your household energy costs. Large appliances consume the most energy, with fridge freezers being no exception.

Here, we explore some of the ways you can keep associated energy costs for your fridge freezer down.

Make use of the auto defrost feature

Over time fridge freezers build up ice due to condensation inside. This ice reduces the efficiency of your fridge freezer and risks food inside perishing faster. When fridge freezers auto defrost they go through a warming and cooling phase, causing your fridge freezer to melt any build-up of ice away.

Not only does this stop you from having to manually defrost – a job no one enjoys doing – but it also keeps your appliance running more efficiently. Chill out and let your fridge freezer do all the work!

Save energy with holiday mode

It’s not just people that like being in holiday mode – your fridge freezer does, too. Fridge freezers benefiting from this feature slightly increase their inside temperature, reducing energy consumption while you’re away from home. Don’t worry about your food going off or bad odours forming, because your fridge freezer will remain cool enough to prevent this from happening.

Next time you go on holiday, be sure to give your fridge freezer one too.

Avoid putting warm leftovers in the fridge

It may not be surprising to hear placing warm food inside your fridge freezer will increase the inside temperature. Whilst this may be a good way to cool food faster, you do run the risk of both increasing your energy bill and causing bacteria to form. Next time you have leftovers, be sure to let them cool down before placing them inside your fridge freezer.

Shut the fridge door!

Did you know that every time you stare longingly into the fridge wondering what’s for dinner, you’re unknowingly increasing your energy bill? Leaving your fridge or freezer door open longer than necessary will allow unwelcome warm air to enter. Your appliance will then need to work extra hard to cool back down to its normal temperature.

If you're looking to upgrade your fridge freezer to a more energy-efficient model, contact our friendly team today.

Which Five Appliances Use the Most Electricity in Your Home?

As household bills aren’t decreasing anytime soon, many of us are looking for ways to save money on our electricity bills. To help you cut down, here are the five domestic appliances use the most energy in your home.

Washing machines

Washing machines are one of the most energy-consuming appliances in the home. When in use, washing machines need to heat the water they use to a set temperature.

It is possible to reduce the energy consumption your washing machine by setting your temperature as low as you can, whilst still at a functional level to clean your clothes.

Fridge freezers

Fridge freezers account for about 13 per cent of a typical household energy bill, using a whopping 408kWh of power per year. Because fridge freezers are running 24 hours a day, they contribute heavily to your bill without you even thinking about it.

Fridge freezers typically last longer than other household appliances, with an average lifespan of around 17 years. Make sure when buying a new one that you opt for an energy-efficient model to keep running costs down for years to come.

Consider turning down the thermostat inside your fridge during the cooler months to help keep your bills lower. You may need to turn your fridge’s temperature up in the summer months due to higher room temperature. Make sure your fridge temperature is always low enough to keep your food cool and safe to consume.

Cookers

Cookers make up a considerable amount of your energy bills. Both electric hobs and ovens use large amounts of energy to run, so cooking bigger or multiple dishes at once – or using a microwave to warm food up – can cut down your bills. An electric hob uses 0.71kWh of energy per use, whilst an electric oven uses an average of 1.56kWh per use.

Tumble dryers

Tumble dryers are one of the biggest energy consumers in your home, using around 2.5kWh per cycle. The best way to cut down is to use the tumble dryer less – wait until you have a bigger load, dry your washing in well-ventilated rooms or hang it out to dry outside on warmer days.

You could also invest in a heat pump tumble dryer. These models reuse hot air from the drying process, making them much more efficient. New affordable models have hit the market in recent years, so they’ve never been more accessible.

TVs

According to Carbon Footprint, TVs are the most expensive appliance to run annually for many households. They only use 0.21kWh per hour, but with typical TVs on for six hours a day, they can top the appliance energy usage chart easily.

Simple solutions for this are switching your TV off at the wall when not in use, as TVs on standby still use electricity, or cutting down on your screen time.

If you need a new energy-efficient appliance for the home, contact our Salisbury-based team of engineers today.

What Size Washing Machine Do I Need?

Are you looking to buy a new washing machine? Here, we provide all the information you need to decide what size washing machine is best for your home.

Drum capacity

A washing machine’s drum capacity determines how much washing it'll fit. Drum capacity is usually based on the weight of the washing you can load into it at once. Typically, a five-six kg drum is ideal for a couple, a small family is suited to a seven-eight kg drum, an eight-10kg drum is perfect for a medium-sized or large family, and very large families may find an 11-12kg drum to be best.

However, the right drum capacity for you also depends on the types of items you’re washing. For example, if you want to be able to wash a king-size duvet or large bundles of towels, you’ll need a large drum.

What if I choose the wrong drum size?

If you choose the wrong size drum capacity for your home, you’re likely to find that it isn’t very efficient. People have the tendency to overload a washing machine with a drum that’s too small for them, and this means that detergent can’t be distributed efficiently and clothing won’t be washed properly. Buying a washing machine with a smaller capacity than you need will also lead to you doing extra washes, which will ultimately cost more in water and energy bills.

Many people think the bigger, the better when it comes to washing machine drum sizes, but if you only do small loads of washing, this isn’t the case.

Washing machine dimensions

It’s important to get the dimensions of your washing machine right. Always measure the area where you’d like to put your washing machine several times before committing to making a purchase.

It’s best to get one that is slightly too small for the available space as this will leave room to manoeuvre it. You should also consider whether drawers or doors surrounding your new washing machine will be able to open properly once it’s in place, as washing machine doors can protrude slightly, causing an obstruction.

If you need help choosing the right washing machine for your needs, contact our knowledgeable team today.

Easy Hacks to Cut Down Your Appliances’ Energy Use

With the cost of living soaring, people are looking for ways they can reduce household bills. Here, we share some easy hacks to cut down on your appliances’ energy use to cut down your bills.

Turn them off at the wall

When your appliances aren't in use, switching them off at the wall can help you cut down your energy usage. Even when on standby, appliances can use considerable amounts of energy.

Washing machine

Don’t wash your clothes at a high temperature if they’re not heavily soiled. Setting your washing machine to 30° – or even 20° if you have the option – will mean that you spend less per wash than if you had it on 40°.

Of course, if your clothes are particularly dirty you might need to use a higher temperature to shift the stains, but lower temperatures are fine for items that just need freshening up. You should also avoid washing half loads where possible – or use the half load option to do this.

Lights

It may sound obvious, but turning the lights off when you leave a room can help to reduce your energy bills considerably. You should try to turn them on only when they’re essential. Make the most of natural light by keeping blinds and curtains open.

Swapping out halogen bulbs for LEDs will also save you money as they use less energy. LEDs come in a number of shades so you can choose the option that’s right for your home.

Cooking

Due to their large size, ovens can be huge consumers of energy. Choosing to use a microwave, air fryer, pressure cooker, or slow cooker can save you money on your bills.

Research recipes that you can make using these smaller appliances, such as stews and curries, and try to use the oven sparingly rather than relying on it every day. When you do use the oven, you can turn it off five-ten minutes earlier than the final cooking time as your food will continue to cook in the heat that has been created – particularly if your oven is energy efficient.

If you're looking to upgrade your appliance to a more energy-efficient model, contact our knowledgeable team today.

After you've ordered your new washing machine, there are a few things that you can do while you wait for that all-important delivery.

Here, we share what you need to do to prepare for a new washing machine to make its installation seamless and hassle-free.

Plan the delivery route

A washing machine is not a small appliance, so delivery can be tricky if you’re not prepared. Firstly, let those delivering your machine know where to park. If possible, leave space on your driveway or save a nearby spot on your road.

Walk the route through your home that the washing machine will take. Ensure that it will fit through doorways and remove any obstacles, such as furniture, which might get in the way.

Ensure you have the right connections

If your new washing machine will be installed where there has been one before, it’s likely that the connections you need will be in place. However, it’s always best to check this before your delivery arrives - especially if you've moved into a new property. You should have three connections: a cold water supply, a waste water pipe, and an electrical connection. These should all be within a metre and a half of your washing machine.

If you spot any damage or find that one of these is missing, a plumber or electrician will be able to assist you.

Research your new washing machine

Although you’ll have done research prior to ordering your new washing machine, reading over any available information will mean that you know how to use it as soon as it arrives.

For example, if you’ve bought a smart washing machine, you’ll need to know how to connect it to your WiFi, or if you’ve bought a washer-dryer, you might want to make sure you’re clued up on how to switch between functions.

The more you know before it arrives, the more prepared you’ll feel once it’s been installed.

If you need a new washing machine, CB Domestics can supply and install your new or reconditioned appliance. Contact us today to find out more about our services.

Freestanding or Integrated Fridge - Which is Better?

If you’re looking to buy a new fridge, you might be wondering which is better: a freestanding or integrated one? Here, we take a look at the pros and cons of both freestanding and integrated fridges so you can decide which option is the best choice for you.

Freestanding fridges - pros and cons

A freestanding fridge will stand alone wherever it’s placed and doesn’t need to integrate with the room or kitchen units, making it ideal for those looking for a flexible option. Available in a wide range of colours, designs, and sizes, freestanding fridges are easy to install and will sit neatly up against a wall or alongside cabinets.

In addition, you can take a freestanding fridge with you if you move house. Freestanding fridges are also great for those with a tight budget as they come at a variety of price points.

Although you can place a freestanding fridge wherever you like, it won’t line up exactly with the rest of your kitchen which makes it a less appealing option for some.

Integrated fridges - pros and cons

An integrated fridge is built into surrounding cabinets. For those looking for a higher-end kitchen finish, an integrated fridge ensures the room looks sleek and well designed by fitting in seamlessly with kitchen units.

Like freestanding fridges, integrated options are available in plenty of colours and styles, so you can choose one that perfectly suits your interiors. There are also a range of additional features that you can opt for, such as a wine cooler or ice dispenser, to add an extra touch of luxe to your kitchen.

Integrated fridges tend to cost more than their freestanding counterparts, and they are also more difficult to install.

As each integrated fridge is designed for a specific space, it’s unlikely that you’d be able to take it with you should you move, and you won’t be able to change its location in your current home, either.

Which is better?

The type of fridge that’s best for you and your home depends on your budget and the space you have available. Both options come with plenty of positives, so the shape of your kitchen space, your budget and your desired kitchen aesthetic will ultimately determine which is the best choice for you.

CB Domestics stock a range of integrated and freestanding fridges for your home - both new and reconditioned.
5 Things You Should Look at When Choosing a New Appliance

When you need a new appliance, it’s often because your current one is faulty or broken. This means that you need a replacement in a hurry – but choosing a new appliance without properly assessing the options can lead to you making the wrong choice.

To help you find the best appliance for your needs, here are five things you should look for.

Energy efficiency rating

All large household appliances have an energy efficiency rating. The new scale, introduced in 2020, uses a simpler A-G scale. A is the best rating for the most efficient appliances, whereas G is the worst rating for the least efficient appliances.

With energy bills skyrocketing, the efficiency of your appliances has never been more important to consider. The more efficient the appliance, the less energy it’ll use and the lower your energy bills will be.

Size

It’s essential to work out the size of appliance you need before investing in a new one. You need to measure both the width and depth of the gap for your new appliance to ensure you’re buying the correct size for your home.

There are other size considerations to factor in, too. Load size is an important factor to consider. For example, washing machines and tumble dryers have varying drum sizes, so you need to consider the size of your washing loads when choosing your appliance.

Brand

There are a vast number of appliance brands on the market. To make your money go further, it’s better to spend a little more on an appliance from a reliable brand with good warranty.

With some brands, it’s difficult to find replacement parts for – or replacement parts are expensive. Opting for a brand with good spare part availability may make your appliance last longer.

Noise rating

Like energy ratings, appliances have noise ratings, too. These ratings are in decibels and indicate how loud the appliance will be when it’s on. For example, 30dB is akin to the noise in a quiet library, whereas 110dB is similar to the noise of a chainsaw.

Additional features

As new appliance models hit the market, there’s an ever-growing range of additional features, too. For example, you might want an ice dispenser or automatic temperature controls in your fridge freezer, an oven with delayed start capability or a washing machine with an air-dry function.

Make sure you know what features are a must-have for you before you start your search.

CB Domestics are trusted, local appliance experts in Salisbury. Contact our friendly team today to discuss our range of new and reconditioned appliances.

A Guide to Different Types of Tumble Dryers

Buying a tumble dryer can be more complex than you’d first imagine. With an ever-increasing range of sizes, models and types of dryers on the market, the choice can be overwhelming.

In this article, we explore the different types of tumble dryer available to help you choose the right model.

Vented tumble dryers

There are two main types of tumble dryer: vented and condenser. Vented tumble dryers are often the cheaper options on the market.

Vented tumble dryers work by removing the damp air from the dryer through a hose. You’ll need to have vent fitted to allow moisture to escape outside, or a window that the hose can fit through.

When a vented dryer is not in use, the hose can be compacted to save space.

Condenser tumble dryers

Unlike vented tumble dryers, condenser tumble dryers can be placed anywhere in your home. Water collects from clothes in a container, rather than needing to be released by a tube. The container needs emptying regularly to keep it working at maximum efficiency.

The room you place your condenser tumble dryer in must be well ventilated, but a vent in your wall or ceiling isn’t essential.

More advanced condenser tumble dryers use washing machine plumbing to remove excess water via a pump. This means you won’t need to empty your water container.

Heat pump tumble dryers

Heat pump tumble dryers are a more efficient type of machine. These dryers reuse warm air from the drying process to save energy.

Automatic tumble dryers

Automatic tumble dryers boast innovative sensor technology to identify when clothes are dry. This means there’s no need to set a timer – the dryer will stop automatically when clothes are dry.

Manual tumble dryers

Unlike automatic tumble dryers, manual tumble dryers use a timer to know when to stop. You’ll select a cycle length when you load in your clothes.

Looking for a new tumble dryer?
5 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Kitchen

Now that spring is well and truly here, it’s time for a spring clean of your kitchen. Here are five top tips for getting your kitchen into shape before summer.

Deep clean your fridge

Fridges can harbour a surprising amount of dirt, so it’s essential to keep them clean. You should deep clean your fridge every few months to ensure your food is being kept in a safe and sanitary environment.

Start by emptying out all food from your fridge – including everything from inside fridge doors. Then, take out each shelf and wash with warm water and an anti-bacterial washing up liquid. Do the same with the drawers and inner door shelves, and ensure they are thoroughly dry before they are returned.

While the fridge is empty of shelves and drawers, wipe the inside of the fridge with a clean cloth and an antibacterial cleaning spray. When all components are dry, you can return the food to a sparkling clean fridge.

Clean your oven

Cleaning the oven is a task that fills many with dread. Months of cooking can leave your oven with residual food and grime on your oven’s interiors. To clean your oven effectively, it’s best to invest in a high-quality oven cleaning product. Apply it to your oven’s interior and shelves, as per the instructions, and leave it to work before scrubbing it off.

If you don’t clean your oven regularly, both the taste of your food and the efficiency of the appliance can be affected.

Clean your dishwasher

Cleaning your dishwasher might seem counter intuitive, but like all cleaning appliances, dishwashers require regular cleaning themselves. If you don’t keep your dishwasher clean, it can become blocked with residual food, start to smell and even fail to clean your dishes properly.

There are specialist dishwasher cleaning products designed especially to remove dirt and grime. Don’t forget to wipe the interiors of the dishwasher with a cloth and antibacterial spray. To ensure your dishwasher is sparkling clean, you’ll need to remove the filter to empty it of food before washing it separately.

You should also clean the seal around your dishwasher door – this can harbour dirt and grime which can cause an unpleasant smell if left untouched.

Declutter

One of the most satisfying tasks to complete in any room of your home is decluttering. As the heart of the home, the kitchen can become a hub for clutter. No spring clean is complete without a thorough cleanse of clutter that has built up over the winter months. You should aim to have all surfaces entirely clear – put away any essential clutter in cupboards and drawers if you can.

Recycle or throw away any non-essential clutter. After all, a tidy home is far more relaxing than a messy one.

Deep clean all kitchen surfaces

Once you’ve decluttered your kitchen surfaces, it’s time to give them a thorough clean. Wipe down worktops and cupboards with an antibacterial cleaning spray. For tougher stains, use a stronger bleach-based product to get your kitchen sparkling.

Don’t forget to clean your sink thoroughly and remove any limescale from the taps.

If your appliances are in need of repair or replacement, get in touch with CB Domestics today.

Why is Your Fridge or Freezer Leaking?

Finding an ominous puddle of water next to your fridge or freezer is a tell-tale sign that something is wrong. However, leaking can often be a problem that’s easy to fix.

Here are some of the most common causes of leaking in fridge freezers.

Your fridge freezer has a faulty door seal

If your appliance has a faulty door seal, this can be the cause of leaking. The seal might be damaged or clogged with dirt which is preventing the door from closing properly. As a result, warm air is entering the fridge and triggering condensation.

Your fridge drain is blocked

Condensation leaves your fridge through a drain hole at the bottom of the appliance. The drain can become blocked with food or dirt, meaning that liquid cannot escape. This problem can be resolved by unblocking the drain.

Damaged drain pan in at the bottom of your appliance

Check the bottom of your fridge freezer for damage. If there’s any cracks in the drain pan, water can leak out of your appliance and onto the floor. A damaged drain pan can be fixed easily with a replacement.

Your appliance is on uneven ground

Check if your fridge freezer is on even ground. If not, the door might be prevented from closing fully, resulting in some water failing to reach the drainpipe. This problem is an easy fix – all you need to do is adjust the appliance’s legs until it is level.

Blocked evaporator in your fridge freezer

If the temperature in your fridge has increased, the evaporator may be blocked – likely with ice. This prevents air from passing into the fridge to cool it. To check if this is the problem, remove the evaporator cover to check for a build-up of ice.

Check your ice dispenser for faults

If your fridge freezer has an ice dispenser, this can be the cause of leaking. For example, the water supply line might have dislodged, the seals become damaged, or hoses damaged or blocked.

A faulty thermostat in your fridge freezer

The fault might lie with your appliance’s thermostat. Leaking, accompanied by irregular temperatures in your fridge freezer, can suggest a problem with the thermostat. Your appliance will need to be examined by an appliance engineer to identify whether this is the problem.

If you are unable to identify the cause of your fridge freezer’s leaking, our professional appliance engineers can help. Contact CB Domestics today to arrange your call out appointment.

How to Switch from a Gas to an Electric Oven

With gas prices skyrocketing, more people than ever are looking to switch from a gas to an electric oven. The cost to run isn’t the only benefit of electric ovens; many favour them for their even cooking, easy cleaning and simple ignition.

If you’re switching from a gas to an electric oven, here’s everything you need to know.

Do you have right circuit for an electric oven?

Many assume that, because their gas cooker plugs into an electrical socket for ignition, a normal socket will suffice for an electric oven. However, electric cookers require a significant current supply to run.

To see if your home already has a circuit to support an electric oven, check the fuse box. If there’s a circuit labelled ‘cooker’, your home is already equipped for an electric oven. If you don’t see this label, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have the right circuit.

Another key indicator is a large – often red – switch adjacent to the oven, so check if you have one in your kitchen. These are often installed in nearby cupboards, so don’t forget to look there.

If you still haven’t located a switch, try looking behind your oven to see if there’s a dedicated cooker connection point.

Is your circuit powerful enough for an electric oven?

If you find that you do have a cooker circuit, it’s important to check how powerful it is. The majority of cooker circuits are installed at 30/32A which are sufficient for most electric ovens. Your fuse board should be labelled with the power of the circuit.

When you know how powerful your circuit is, you’ll then know what model of cooker it will support. Here’s a rough guide:

32A Circuit suitable for cooker up to 7.5kW

40A Circuit suitable for cooker up to 9.5kW

45A Circuit suitable for cooker up to 0.5kW

50A Circuit suitable for cooker up to 11.5kW

How to switch to electric from gas

When switching from a gas to electric oven, it’s not essential to have the gas line removed. However, a gas-safe professional must cap the gas pipe and ensure that the valve is shut.

If your home doesn’t have a suitable electrical circuit for a cooker, you’ll need a qualified electrician to install one. Once your circuit is in place, you’ll need an appliance technician to connect the electric cable to your new cooker and socket.

If you’re looking to switch from a gas to an electric oven in Salisbury, CB Domestics can help. Get in touch with our qualified appliance engineers to book an appointment.

Make, model, budget and size are important considerations – but you shouldn’t forget to look at the energy label.

The UK’s energy label system was overhauled last year, making way for a new, simpler classification system. But what do the ratings mean?

Here's a quick guide to appliance energy labels to help you choose your new appliance.

What is the appliance energy label?

A new energy label was introduced in the UK in 2021. The new scale revamped the old A+++ to G into a simpler A-G classification system to indicate efficiency. To make the scale easier to read, it also includes simpler consumption usage measurements presented either as kWh per year, kWh per 1,000 hours or kWh per 100 cycles (varying per product group). The new label also includes a QR code to provide instant access to product information on the manufacturer’s website.

The scale only applies currently to washing machines, washer-dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, TVs and lights. Ovens, tumble dryers and other appliances are still using the old scale for now.

What do the different energy ratings mean?

Appliances are tested for how much energy they use during a typical use, and this gives them a rating on the scale. A is the most efficient (and therefore the best rating), with G being the least efficient.

There are some additional symbols at the bottom of energy labels which vary depending on the type of appliance. For example, the small tap symbol indicates how much water the appliance uses in litres, and the sound symbol suggests how much noise the appliance will make on a scale from A-D (A being the quietest).

What does a poor rating mean?

If you opt for an appliance with a poor energy rating, it will end up costing you more in the long run. This also means the appliance is less environmentally friendly, so if you’re looking to make a sustainable choice, avoid appliance with low ratings.

CB Domestics stock a range of new and reconditioned appliances in Salisbury.

Washing machines can be an unwelcome expense when they break down. Although it is often cheaper to repair your appliance, replacing it can be a wiser financial decision based on the severity of the fault and age of the model.

Here’s a guide to help you decide whether to repair or replace your broken washing machine.

How old is your washing machine?

The average washing machine in the UK lasts just over seven years. However, with careful maintenance and regular cleaning, washing machines can last in excess of ten years.

If your washing machine is older than seven years and is experiencing problems, it may be more cost-effective for you to invest in a new machine rather than repair your current one. This depends on the condition of your machine, the quality of the model and the severity of any faults.

How severe is the fault?

Whether your appliance should be repaired or replaced largely depends on how bad the problem is. Minor faults that can be easily fixed include blocked pipes, broken door latches and a tripped fuse. If your washing machine has a severe fault, such as a broken motor, excessive leaking or a malfunctioning lid switch, it might be cheaper in the long run to replace your washing machine rather than repair it.

Get the opinion of an appliance expert

The best way to find out if you should repair or replace a broken washing machine is to ask an expert. At CB Domestics, our qualified appliance engineers will inspect your washing machine thoroughly to get to the root of the problem. They will then advise you on whether it can be repaired or needs to be replaced. We always to try repair appliances wherever we can, and we only recommend replacement when it is absolutely necessary.

To book a visit from a CB Domestics engineer, get in touch with the team today.

Five Appliance Hacks You Need to Know About

Appliances are a core part of our everyday lives, designed to make mundane daily tasks easier. However, many appliances have hidden features to make life even simpler which can go unnoticed for years.

Here are five appliance hacks you need to know about.

Moveable dishwasher rack

Have you ever been loading your dishwasher and found that your plates are too tall to fit? In many dishwashers, the top rack is moveable. This means you can move it up and down to accommodate tall plates, glasses and dishes, enabling you to fit more in at once.

Hidden washing machine pipe

Unbeknownst to many users, most washing machines have a hidden pipe at the side. This pipe is designed to allow you to drain water from your washing machine into a bowl or other container with ease. With this clever design feature, there’s no need to attempt to squeeze a thin container underneath your machine to capture water when you drain it for cleaning or other purposes.

Secret tray at the top of dishwashers

Many dishwashers have a hidden tray right at the top – something that recently went viral on TikTok. This thin tray – often missed due to it blending in with the rest of the dishwasher – is designed for washing cutlery and other thin kitchen utensils. If your dishwasher has a tray, you can use it as a space saving-hack. Simply remove your cutlery basket and load your cutlery into the hidden top rack, thereby creating more space for bowls and plates on the bottom rack.

Use the bottom of the oven

To achieve perfectly roasted vegetables, some oven floors can be used to hold trays instead of the shelves. This hack was shared by Carolynn Carreño in her book Bowls of Plenty, who learnt it from a fellow chef. She says that the oven floor provides high, even and direct heat, making it perfect for roasting vegetables in a baking pan. The hack can also be used to fit more into your oven at once – ideal for large meals with many components, like a Sunday roast.

Make sure you check with the owner’s manual of your oven before trying this hack to make sure that a heavy tray can be placed at the bottom safely.

Removable glass in oven door

Many people are unaware that the innermost layer of glass in most ovens is removable. If you’re struggling to get your oven sparkling clean, try removing the second pane of glass. Not only does this allow you to clean the inner pane with ease, but it also gives you easy access to the outer layer of glass.

Make sure you check your owner’s manual before trying this hack to make sure that the glass is removable.

If you need an appliance repaired or replaced in the Salisbury area, get in touch with CB Domestics today.

With our homes becoming increasingly infiltrated by smart technology and appliances to make our lives easier, it’s unsurprising that the kitchen is no exception.

Here are our insights into the top appliance trends that will dominate in 2022.

Smart appliances

There’s a steady stream of new smart appliances coming to market, from refrigerators where you knock on the door to see what's inside without having to open, to washing machines you can set going using your smartphone, kettles you can boil remotely and ovens you can look inside to monitor your food as it cooks and even control the cooking settings from your phone.

Multifunction appliances

Now more than ever homes are looking to use the space in their kitchens more efficiently and consumers are turning to appliances with more than one use. Washer/driers and fridge/freezers are nothing new, but more homes are opting for ovens that also double as a microwave

Steam

Steam is now featuring heavily in new appliances to market. The steam oven is fast becoming thought of the new must have oven in your kitchen. Not only is it said to be a healthier way to bake where it cooks with hot steam rather than hot air, food is less likely to dry out, but there are some models on the market that clean themselves using a steam clean cycle.

Integrated appliances

With the rise in minimalist kitchen design, more consumers are placing their appliances within their units, not only are microwaves and ovens finding their way into full height units, but coffee machines, wine coolers and ice dispensers.

Finger touch operation

More consumers are shying away from appliances with dials and knobs, like hobs and ovens, and are choosing new appliances with touch panels. Consumers feel like they have more control over cooking temperatures, look more modern and they are also easier to keep clean.

Smart plugs

It is now becoming more common to use smart plugs to be able to control smaller kitchen appliances either directly from your phone or via your smart speaker. Appliances these works with are coffee machines, slow cookers, kettles, toasters (they just need to have a fixed ‘on’ setting).

If you’re looking for help choosing new appliances, contact us today.

This Valentine’s Day, make your evening special by planning in advance and ensuring that everything is in place for the perfect, romantic evening.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday this year, so you may choose to celebrate during the weekend before the 14th, or on the Monday evening itself. Due to the pandemic, many of us have become used to having night’s in rather than night’s out, so we have come up with a few ideas and tips to help you plan a date night with a difference.

Romantic home cooked dinner for two

If you are planning a romantic date night for two and would prefer to cook at home instead of visit a restaurant, the possibilities are endless! Cooking for the one you love is a wonderful way to show them how much you care by putting your efforts into making their favourite meal.

Find the perfect recipe. If you have a cookbook laced with ideas for quality home cooking, start here and plan your shopping list. If you don’t have a book for reference, there are a plethora of online resources you can go to, simply by searching for recipes online.

Buy your ingredients a couple of days in advance and plan your courses, preparing something for a main and dessert, or if you really want to go the whole 9 yards, also plan your other courses and be sure to add an alcoholic and non-alcoholic option. You should also take note of any special dietary requirements that your date may have (and if the meal you prepare is a surprise, try to subtly drop ‘likes & dislikes’ into the conversation in advance so your date doesn’t get suspicious!).

Easy Meal Options

If you are not confident with home cooking, there are some fantastic ways to prepare a delicious meal without cooking completely from scratch. Why not purchase a ‘meal deal’ from a popular supermarket, where you can often by a main dish, side and a dessert and a bottle of wine for £10 to £20. This way, there will be less preparation and you can still enjoy tasty food that will have the essence of home cooking and save you some time on the night to enjoy spending time with your loved one.

Dressing the Table

The food is just one part of your meal experience. You may also wish to examine and prepare the atmosphere or ambience, to make your Valentine’s date feel even more special. Dress the table, choose your crockery, make sure you have the correct glasses for your drinks and put some candles on the table to help set the mood. This will really impress your partner.

Make sure your oven is clean and working

You can avoid any mishaps on the night which could prevent your meal from turning out the way you had planned! It is recommended that you clean your oven the week before and be sure to check that everything is working correctly. Depending on when you last had your oven checked, repaired or serviced – you may wish to arrange for the oven to be professionally cleaned or serviced before the big day, to prevent your meal being ruined on the night.

Prepare some entertainment

Music often helps to set the mood, so be sure to choose a playlist which speaks volumes about your relationship and sends that romantic message. If your budget allows, you may even wish to hire a musician to play for you throughout your meal. Although your dinner will be the main part of your evening, you may also wish to prepare some entertainment for afterwards, to help keep the conversation flowing.

You could be a movie person, or you may wish to have a card or board game at the ready to enjoy after your meal. You could also buy your date a gift which contribute to your evening entertainment, and plan for them to open it during or after dinner.

Kitchen Appliance Support

By following these steps, you will be sure to impress your date or partner and create an unforgettable date night in for Valentine’s Day that runs smoothly and is a great success.

If you need help to get your oven, or any of your kitchen appliances repaired in time for Valentine’s Day, give our friendly, expert team a call on 01722 711372 or use our online contact form.

How to Clean Your Dishwasher Properly

You might think dishwashers clean themselves, but like washing machines, they require regular cleaning to keep them functioning properly. If you let your dishwasher go uncleaned for a long period of time, there will be a build-up of gunk and residual food. This can cause long-term problems with drainage, odours and leaking.

Here’s how to properly give your dishwasher a deep clean.

Clean the dishwasher filter

The filter is the most important part of your dishwasher to keep clean. If your filter is dirty, the rest of your dishwasher will be too. You need to remove the filter from the dishwasher and rinse it with hot water.

Then, using a soft brush or toothbrush, scrub the filter’s mesh, being sure to remove any food or grime left in the filter. Don’t use a wire brush or scourer pad as these may damage the filter. Rinse it clean again using hot water.

You should also clean around the filter inside of the dishwater using a cloth and warm, soapy water.
Clean the interiors

Using a cloth and warm soapy water, wipe down the interiors of the dishwasher. This is easier to do with both racks removed. You should also thoroughly wipe the door seal – a build-up of gunk in here can result in a bad odour.

Clean the exterior

Don’t forget to clean the outside of your dishwasher, too. Wipe down the front of the door when you clean the rest of your kitchen cupboards. If your dishwasher has a stainless steel front, it’s best to use a specialised cleaning product to remove smears.

How often does your dishwasher need cleaning?

Your dishwasher should only need a deep clean once a month. However, on a weekly basis you should clean out the filter, wipe down interior door and clean the door seal.

If your dishwasher drain is blocked, you should seek professional help as this can be tricky and there is a risk of flooding if it is not carried out properly. The team at CB Domestics can help with blocked drains and other dishwasher faults – get in touch today to arrange a repair service in the Salisbury area.

Four Top Tips to Reduce Your Household Energy Bills

With energy prices constantly rising, you might be looking for ways to reduce your energy use at home. Appliances are among the biggest energy users in your household, so optimising your use of these can save you money in the long run.

Here’s four top tips to reduce your household energy bills.

Choose the most efficient appliances

When you’re investing in a new appliance, you should factor efficiency into your decision. Every appliance has an energy label with a rating from A to G, with G being the least efficient. This rating tells you how much energy the appliance uses in a typical use.

Typically, the larger the appliance, the lower the efficiency. It’s best to check the efficiency of appliances in the size you require, then choose your model with the best energy efficiency label.

Don’t choose a bigger appliance than you need. If you don’t store much frozen food, for example, paying to power a large freezer will be a waste of energy and money.

Regularly service your appliances

Your appliances should be serviced every year to ensure maximum efficiency. A service will identify any faults in your appliance that are wasting energy, such as a leak or malfunctioning motor.

The engineer will also catch any problems early that have the potential to cause an expensive problem further down the line, saving you a costly repair and possibly even an appliance replacement.

Switch your appliance off at the plug

When your appliance is not in use, you should switch it off at the wall, either by flicking the switch or unplugging it. Even when your appliance is in standby mode, it can still use energy. Did you know that your microwave uses more power on standby than it does when heating food? This is because the clock is always running.

Over a period of time, this wasted energy can add up and increase your annual energy bill by a considerable amount.

Save up washing and dishes

It’s inefficient to use your dishwasher, washing machine or tumble dryer when they aren’t fully loaded. You should wait until you have a full load of washing or dirty dishes before starting a cycle.

However, you shouldn’t load it over capacity as this can cause damage to your machine.
Washing your dishes and clothes on a lower temperature cycle will also save on your energy bills.

If you need an appliance service or repair in the Salisbury area, get in touch with CB Domestics today.

Why You Need to Get Your Appliances Serviced Before Christmas

What could be worse than a broken oven, fridge or dishwasher on Christmas Day? This is the kind of Christmas disaster thousands experience every year, so it’s important to get your appliances serviced ahead of Christmas to ensure that your festive feasts run smoothly.

Here’s why you need to get your appliances serviced before the Christmas period begins.

Avoid a Christmas Day disaster

Imagine you go to put your turkey in the oven on Christmas morning, only to find that your oven won’t heat up. Or you take your prize turkey out of the fridge to discover that it has broken overnight, leaving your turkey warm and unsafe to eat. Picture stacking your dishwasher full of plates after Christmas lunch, only to realise that it won’t turn on.

As food is one of – if not the – most important aspect of Christmas for many, any disruption to your festive dining can result in your celebrations falling flat. Make sure your food stays cold and frozen with a fully functioning fridge and freezer, and ensure that your dishes will be cooked thoroughly and efficiently in a recently serviced oven.

Don’t forget to arrange maintenance for your dishwasher, too – nobody wants to spend Christmas afternoon tackling a mountain of washing up.

Identify any faults before they impact your festivities

An appliance service from a qualified professional will identify any faults before they hinder the functioning of your oven, dishwasher or fridge-freezer. This might be a small fault, like a broken part that can be easily replaced, or a larger problem like a broken motor or large crack.

Arranging your service with plenty of time to rectify problems, order replacement parts and source a new appliance will reduce your risk of a Christmas disaster.

Challenges of finding an emergency engineer over Christmas

If you do not get your appliances serviced before Christmas and a fault occurs, you might struggle to arrange a visit from an engineer over the holiday period.

While many appliance repair companies will run an emergency call-out service over Christmas, these engineers are often incredibly busy due to the surge in demand and the limited number of engineers who are working.

It can also cost more than usual to book an appointment on bank holidays or out-of-hours, so it’ll save you money to arrange a service before the festive holiday period begins.

If you live in Salisbury or the surrounding areas, get in touch with CB Domestics today to book a pre-Christmas appliance service.

How to Clean Your Oven Properly

With Christmas just around the corner, now is a good time to give your oven a deep clean ahead of the season’s festivities. Here’s the best technique to get your oven sparkling clean ready for Christmas.

How often should I clean my oven?

Your oven should be cleaned every three months, or when you notice a build-up of food and grime. It should also be cleaned ahead of cooking important meals, such as Christmas, to make sure your food tastes its best.

Why do you need to clean your oven?

A build-up of burnt food waste inside your oven can create an unpleasant, smoky smell in both your oven and your kitchen. These unpleasant odours can even impact the taste of your food, so it’s essential to remove them regularly.

Your oven can also become less efficient at reaching temperatures if grime is left untouched, which puts you at a greater risk of consuming undercooked and therefore unsafe food.

How to clean your oven

Start by removing the shelves and wiping out any pieces of loose food and dirt. Set the shelves to soak in warm water and washing up liquid. You can also wash your shelves in the dishwasher if they fit, but soaking is better for shelves that are particularly grimy.

The best way to give your oven a thorough clean is to use a high-quality oven cleaning product, such as Oven Pride, Oven Mate, Cif Oven & Grill or Mr Muscle. These products should be applied to all surfaces inside the oven – including the door – and left to work for around 30 minutes.

When the chemicals have worked their magic, thoroughly rinse your oven using water and a clean cloth. It’s important to remove all traces of the oven cleaner – harsh chemicals in these products can be harmful to your health if left to contaminate food while it cooks.

Once clean, leave your oven interiors to dry whilst you clean the shelves. You can use a sponge or cloth to wipe the shelves down, and a scrubbing brush or metal scourer to remove tougher stains.

How to keep your oven clean

After all your hard work to deep clean your oven, keeping it clean can save you more work down the line. Wipe down your oven doors with warm soapy water once a week whilst removing any residual food and grime.

You can also use an oven liner in the base of your oven to keep it clean. There are many non-stick, easy-clean liners available to buy that catch any food that drops from the shelves. Empty these regularly to prevent burnt food build-up.

If your oven is broken, get in touch with the CB Domestics team today to arrange a visit from a qualified engineer.

Four Top Tips to Make Your Appliances Last Longer

Appliances can be a large household expenditure when they break, which can be particularly troublesome when they need replacing prematurely. Save money down the line by caring for you appliances now – regular maintenance can help your oven, fridge, freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher all last for longer.

Here are four top tips for making your appliances last longer.

Clean your appliances regularly

Cleaning is one of the most important factors in how long your appliances last. Make sure you clean gunk from your washing machine, including in the seals, and remove food waste from your dishwasher. Rinsing your dishes to remove excess food is a good practice to keep your dishwasher cleaner inside.

All filters need to be emptied regularly – you'll find these in washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers. Remove all gunk, dust and food from these to prevent any blockages and keep your appliances cleaning dishes and laundry efficiently.

Keep the coils behind your fridge clean – these are vital for keeping your fridge cool, so hoover or brush them regularly (turn your fridge off first).

Run them regularly

You might be trying to save money by drying your washing on a clothes airer or washing your dishes by hand. However, it’s important to run your appliances regularly so that you keep all the component ticking over. If you don’t run your dishwasher regularly, expect faults with the pipes, motor and pump down the line.

Don’t overload your appliances

Your washing machine, dishwasher and tumble dryer can be damaged if you put too much into them. Check the user instructions to see the maximum loads and be sure you do not exceed them.

Call out professional engineers to make repairs

If your appliance needs repairing, it’s best to get it fixed by a professional appliance engineer. If you attempt to fix your appliance yourself and something goes wrong, this can create further damage and a more expensive repair in the future. A professional will also be able to identify the cause of the problem and supply the correct parts for your model.

If your appliance needs repairing in the Salisbury area, get in touch with CB Domestics today.

Get Ready for Christmas with Our Appliance Checklist

Now Christmas is nearly here, it’s time to make sure your appliances are in top condition. Nothing will disrupt your Christmas Day lunch or New Year’s Eve party like a broken oven, fridge or dishwasher

Make sure your oven is clean and in full working order

It’s essential to have a sparkling clean oven before you start cooking any festive feasts. If your oven is dirty, burnt food deposits can impact the taste of your food and create an unpleasant smoky atmosphere in your kitchen. It can also be a health hazard, with food deposits harbouring dirt, bacteria and other harmful agents. Extremely dirty ovens can also be a fire hazard, so it’s important to clean your oven before your Christmas cooking begins.

If you’ve noticed that your oven isn’t working properly, now is the time to get it fixed. Whether it’s a faulty light, slow heating time or temperamental burners, get them repaired before they impact your Christmas festivities.

Get faulty dishwashers repaired

If your dishwasher isn’t working properly, get it repaired now to save an unending mountain of washing up on Christmas Day. Key signs your dishwasher needs repairing includes rust, cracks, drainage problems, leaking, unusual noises and dishes remaining dirty after a cycle. Often, dishwashers will only require a new part or minor repair work, so you might not need to invest in a whole new dishwasher.

Dishwashers only have a lifespan of around eight to ten years, so if your dishwasher is nearing the end of its life, it’s a good idea to replace it ahead of the Christmas season.

Clean and create space in your fridge freezer

Your fridge and freezer will be working their hardest at Christmas time when they are likely to be at their fullest and in high demand. Create space in your fridge and freezer ahead of time to make room for festive treats and turkeys. Whilst they are at their emptiest, use the opportunity to give your appliances a deep clean – it’s surprising how much dirt can be hiding in your fridge and freezer so it’s important to clean them regularly.

This is also the time to get your fridge or freezer looked at by a professional if there are any indications that it might need repairing. Signs these appliances have a fault include leaking, excessive noise and food going bad before its best by date.

If your appliance is in need of a pre-Christmas check-up, get in touch with the CB Domestics team today to book a visit from one of our engineers.

Broken Dishwasher: Should You Repair or Replace It?

A broken dishwasher can be a bother for both your day-to-day life and your wallet. It’s often the more economical option to repair your dishwasher, but if it has reached the end of its lifespan or if the fault is too complex, it might be better in the long run to invest in a new one. Below, we discuss some factors that impact whether it’s better to repair or replace your dishwasher.

The age of your dishwasher

The age of your dishwasher is an important factor in whether it is worth repairing or not. If your dishwasher is over 10 years old, or getting close to that, it may have reached the end of its lifespan and would therefore be more economical to replace. The 10-year mark is not a firm guideline – lots of other factors impact the condition of your dishwasher, including the spec of the model and how well it has been maintained.

It’s also worth remembering that newer dishwashers are more economical, so the money saved on your water and electricity bills might make the expense of a new one worthwhile.

The severity of the dishwasher fault

Your dishwasher might only need a simple repair – for example, it might require a replacement door latch, pressure switch or drain pump. For dishwashers that need a major repair, such as a motor or circulation pump, you will need to consider the cost of the parts and labour when deciding what the most economical option is for you.

Your dishwasher is leaking

If your dishwasher is leaking or has rust, this can be an indicator that you need to replace your dishwasher. It can be an easy fix, but in many cases, a leaking dishwasher has irreparable damage such as extensive cracks or more severe internal faults. In this case, investing in a new one is the economical option.

Get expert advice from an appliance specialist

If your dishwasher is broken, the CB Domestics team are on hand in the Salisbury area to repair, replace or advise on what’s best for your dishwasher. Contact us today to discuss your dishwasher’s faults with a member of our expert team.

With more than 22 million households in the UK connected to the gas grid, the global gas crisis is likely to impact a huge proportion of the population. Here, we explain what’s caused problems for the energy industry and detail exactly what you should do if your gas supplier goes under.

What’s causing the gas crisis?

Wholesale gas prices have rocketed this year by 250 percent since January - 70 percent of which has occurred since August alone, according to the UK’s Oil & Gas trade body.

The increase in prices is due to a supply shortage ahead of winter. After the particularly long and cold winter of 2020/2021, natural gas storage was drained and it has not been replenished at the normal rate over summer.

Solar and wind output has also been lower in recent weeks, thereby reducing their contribution to the national grid. Another factor further reducing supply is Russia, who have sent less than one-fifth of their usual pre-pandemic gas quota to Europe.

My gas company has gone bust – what should I do?

Several energy companies, including Utility Point, People’s Energy and PFP Energy, have already gone under. If your gas supplier goes bust, the first thing you should do is take a meter reading.
You may wish to cancel your direct debit, but do not switch companies – sit tight and wait for Ofgem to assign you a new supplier automatically.

To get a new supplier, you do not need to do anything. Your supply shouldn’t be impacted and the changeover should only take Ofgem a few days. Ofgem’s safety net will ensure that your supply and any credit balance is protected.

When your new supplier contacts you, you can ask to be put onto their cheapest tariff. They will give details on how they will manage your account balance and any credit refunds you may be due. You can also shop around and switch supplier if you find a better deal – you won’t be charged exit fees if you leave.

Want to switch from gas to electric?

If your gas appliance needs repairing or you’re looking to switch from gas to electric, CB Domestics’ Gas Safe engineers specialise in appliance repair and replacement in the Salisbury area. Get in touch with our team today to discuss your requirements.

Four Signs Your Washing Machine Needs Repairing

If your washing machine isn’t working properly, you may be wondering if the problem is an easy fix or requires repairing by a professional. Below are some key signs that your washing machine has a fault that needs to be repaired.

Water isn’t draining from your washing machine

If your washing machine drum still has water in it after the wash cycle ends, your machine isn’t draining properly. A blockage may be the cause of this – material from the machine can become lodged in the hose drain or U-bend, for example. It may also be an indicator of a problem with your pump filter which will need to be replaced if it’s broken.

Your washing machine isn’t spinning

If the drum isn’t spinning at all, there may be a broken latch or interlock preventing the door from closing or locking properly. The drive belt may also have become damaged, stopping your machine’s drum spinning as it should.

If your machine isn’t completing a fast spin at the end of cycles, your clothes will be soaking wet when you remove them. This can indicate a fault with the pressure system or a worn motor which prevents the drum from reaching the fast spin speeds necessary.

An appliance engineer will need to assess your machine to identify the faulty part before sourcing and fitting a replacement.

Your washing machine is noisy

While washing machines can be loud, if your washing machine is abnormally noisy it can be indicator of a fault. Possible causes of a noisy washing machine include worm drum bearings, unbalanced appliance feet or obstructions in the drum.

Your washing machine isn’t cleaning your clothes

You may have noticed that your washing machine isn’t cleaning your clothes properly or as well as it used to. A common and easily fixable cause is a blocked detergent tray – if your washing detergent isn’t making it to your clothes in the drum, they won’t be getting cleaned properly. More difficult causes to fix yourself include a clogged or broken filter, blocked drainage pipe or fault with the heating element that is preventing the water from getting warm.

If your washing machine isn’t working properly, contact our Salisbury-based team of engineers today.

If you’re thinking of investing in a new cooker, you may be torn between a gas and electric model. Perhaps you’ve had a gas cooker in the past and are considering a more environmentally friendly option, or you’re wondering if a gas cooker might save you some pennies down the line.

Gas Cooker Pros

Gas cookers can be slightly cheaper to run than electric cookers as gas tends to cost less than electricity, though you should check with your energy supplier before making a purchase.

Gas hobs boast several advantages over electric ones, including immediate heat and instant control over the size of the flame and therefore the amount of heat produced.

Gas Cooker Cons

Gas hobs are more difficult to clean, with raised burners and pan supports collecting dirt and grime more than flat electric ones.

The open flame on gas hobs can be less safe than their electric counterparts and may also result in a loss of efficiency, heating food more slowly than electric hobs. Igniters on gas hobs can become defective over time.

Gas cookers can be more difficult and costly to install into your home as a gas supply is required, meaning that you need to enlist a qualified Gas Safety engineer to install it.

Electric Cooker Pros

Electric cookers are cheaper and easier to install than gas cookers as no gas supply – or qualified gas professional – is required.

Another advantage of electric cookers is that they distribute heat more evenly around the oven due to the fan that most feature. They also tend to be easier to turn on without requiring ignition like gas cookers.

Electric hobs have a number of advantages over their gas counterparts – their flatness makes them easy to clean, plus stable and durable.

Some electric cookers boast induction hobs which are incredibly energy efficient.

Electric Cooker Cons

One of the largest disadvantages of electric cookers is the time it takes for them to heat up. Electric hobs also stay warm after they have been turned off, which can pose a safety hazard or leave food cooking for longer than necessary.

In the event of a power cut, electric cookers will not work, whereas gas cookers can run as long as there is a gas supply.

Electric hobs are more prone to damage and stains, but with proper care and cleaning these can be prevented.

Having trouble with your gas or electric cooker in the Salisbury area? Contact us today for a free estimate to fix or replace your appliance.

Here, we share our top tips for cleaning your fridge so you can be confident that yours is being well looked after.

Start with the shelves and drawers

The first step in giving your fridge a thorough clean is to remove its shelves and drawers. These should then be cleaned with warm, soapy water and left to dry. If your fridge has glass shelves you might like to let them reach room temperature before introducing them to hot water as this will reduce the risk of them cracking.

Clean the interior of the fridge

With the drawers and shelves out of the way you can start cleaning the interior of the fridge itself. The fridge should be cleaned with a mix of cold water and your chosen cleaning product as using hot water could raise its temperature and will delay you being able to safely store your food again. Use a cotton bud to get into the grooves where the shelves sit and ensure that you dry the fridge once you’ve finished cleaning it.

Don’t forget the handle and seals

Although the inside of your fridge might be the grubbiest part, the handles and seals require some attention too. Crumbs and other debris can gather in both of these places and can be easily removed with a brush and then wiped over and dried. Once you’ve finished cleaning your fridge, give it time to return to the right temperature before adding your food back in.

Now that you’ve read our top tips for cleaning your fridge you can be confident that your appliance is being well maintained. However, if you think that there’s a problem with your fridge that is causing an issue, contact our Salisbury-based team and we’ll be happy to help!

Three Signs Your Oven Needs Repairing

An oven that isn’t working effectively won’t only ruin your dinner but could also become a safety hazard if not dealt with correctly. Here, we share three signs your oven needs repairing so you know when it’s time to stop cooking and call a professional.

It’s making noises

Typically, an oven doesn’t make a lot of noise when in use, so anything loud or unusual is definitely a sign that your oven needs repairing.

Buzzing, whirring, or ticking noises could indicate that there’s a loose part or something that needs fixing, and in this case you should stop using your oven until you’ve spoken to a professional and know that it’s safe.

Your food isn’t cooking properly

If your oven is producing food that’s undercooked or burnt you might think that it’s your cooking skills that are the problem. However, it may be more likely that something is stopping it from heating up properly or there’s an issue with the thermostat.

If your tried and tested recipes just aren’t turning out like they normally do, it’s time to have your oven checked and repaired so you can get back to cooking your favourite dishes.

There’s a weird smell

As with above, a weird smell coming from your oven shouldn’t make you automatically blame your cooking as it could be a sign that something is wrong.

Leaks from gas ovens and burning wires in electric ovens are both serious hazards, so if your appliance is producing a weird smell you should immediately turn it off and contact a professional who can repair your oven and check that there are no safety issues.

If you notice one of these three signs that your oven needs repairing and are based in Salisbury or the surrounding area, contact us today and let us assess your oven and give you peace of mind.

7 Tips to Keep Your Household Appliances in Good Condition

If taken care of, your household appliances can perform at an optimal level for a long period of time. However, many people are not aware of the small things we can do to ensure our most relied on appliances are properly maintained. Avoid unnecessary faults and costly energy bills with our top tips on looking after your domestic appliances.

Don’t overload your washing machine – if your machine is too full when in use, the movement can cause damage to the agitator. To avoid this, only fill the drum ¾ of the way. Aim to wash the machine on an empty cycle every 2 week to avoid unpleasant odours and residue.

Check your fridge’s air seals – keep energy bills low and food quality high by regularly checking the door of your fridge and the rubber gasket sealing in the cool air for possible damage that could lead to gas escaping, which could be increasing the power consumption of the fridge.

Clean your dishwasher – take out the spray arm of your dishwasher and clean separately every few months for better performance of your dishwasher. You should also clean the filter if it is not self-cleaning, and occasionally use acids such as vinegar to remove build up and unpleasant smells.

Open your oven door – clean the inside of your oven regularly to keep it in good working condition, as the leftover heat from cooking will harden food residue and make it harder to remove. You should also check for damage in the door to ensure there is no accidental loss of heat from cracks.

Replace the vacuum belt – to ensure performance of your vacuum cleaner remains at an optimum level, replace the belt in your machine every 6 months. You should also change the bag regularly as when this is full the vacuum cleaner will spread dirt in areas that are already clean.

Swap out your air conditioning filter – if your a/c unit uses disposable filters, these should be replaced on a regular basis. If it is reusable, clean the filter every 2-3 weeks to keep the air cool and electricity consumption low.

Keep your TV cool – If your television is placed in a hot environment or the brightness is consistently kept on a high level, the lifespan can be severely reduced as the light emitters are going to exhaust quicker. Switch off your TV when not in use to avoid overheating.

What to do if you find a problem with a household appliance?

If you notice an issue with one of your appliance that can’t be fixed with one of the tips from the list above, contact CB Domestics for a professional repairs service.

We have over 15 years of experience of specialising in appliance repairs and can work across a wide range of manufacturers. If your appliance cannot be repaired, we also offer new and reconditioned goods at a competitive price.

This means that you won’t experience any loose items which could cause noise or vibrate out of place.
The Benefits of Freestanding Appliances

There are lots of decisions to make when updating your kitchen and choosing whether to opt for freestanding or integrated appliances is one of them. Here, we share some of the benefits of freestanding appliances to help you to work out which is the right option for your kitchen.

Freestanding appliances can be moved around

One of the top benefits of freestanding appliances is that they can be moved around as and when required. As long as there’s enough space available, your freestanding appliance can go just about anywhere! This is different to integrated appliances which are built-in to a specific place and cannot be moved. The ability to move your freestanding appliances also enables you to take them with you if you move to a new house, which means that you don’t have the hassle of purchasing new items.

There’s lots of choice

When you decide to opt for freestanding appliances, you’ll be delighted to find that there’s lots of choice. From brightly coloured fridges to the latest washing machines, you can choose pieces that best suit your tastes in the knowledge that you’ll be able to replace them when interior trends or your requirements change. With freestanding appliances, you can make them a feature whereas integrated appliances tend to blend in with the rest of the kitchen.

Freestanding appliances can be budget friendly

Of course, there are high and low-price points for anything that you’re shopping for, but you’ll tend to find that freestanding appliances can be more budget friendly than their integrated counterparts. This is because you have more freedom to shop around than you do with built-in appliances which have to be a specific size and shape in order to be integrated. Plus, there are more brands and features to choose from which offers a wider selection to suit all budgets.

Now that you know the benefits of freestanding appliances, you can decide whether this is the right option for you and your kitchen.
Three Signs Your Fridge Needs Repairing

A fridge is an essential part of any kitchen, and fresh food can spoil very quickly if it isn’t working efficiently. Not only does this produce a lot of unnecessary waste, it can add up to be extremely costly over time. To avoid this happening in your home, CB Domestics have summarised the main three signs that your fridge needs repairing.

It’s making strange noises

Fridges will generally make some intermittent noise as they work, but if your fridge starts making strange sounds that are out of the ordinary it could be a sign that it needs to be looked at by a professional. Odd sounds could be caused by anything from the fan to the compressor, so it’s not advisable to look for the source of the noise yourself as there could be some safety concerns depending on what the issue is.

It’s not maintaining the right temperature

If you’re finding that your fridge isn’t keeping things cool, or is freezing your food, it could be a sign that something is broken. Check the dial inside your fridge to ensure that it hasn’t been changed or knocked by something. The higher the number on the dial, the colder your fridge will be, so test it out by increasing or decreasing the number (depending on if its too warm or too cold) and leaving it for a few hours to see what happens. If you don’t notice any significant changes, it’s likely that your fridge needs repairing.

It’s stopped working completely

Of course, the main sign that your fridge needs repairing is that it’s stopped working completely! If this happens, take a look behind the fridge to check that the power cord is still plugged in properly and hasn’t been pulled loose. You should also check that the cable isn’t damaged. If nothing looks wrong or out of place, arrange for a professional to come and take a look.

If you’re located in Salisbury and notice any of the above issues with your fridge, contact CB Domestics today and we’ll be happy to carry out the necessary repairs at a competitive price.

If this happens to you it’s vital that you contact an appliance repair company to help you out, but choosing the right one can be difficult. Here, we share our tips for choosing an appliance repair company, so you know what to look out for.

Fully trained engineers

Home appliances can often come with risks when they break, regardless of whether they are electrical or gas appliances, so ensuring that you contact a company with fully trained engineers is integral. The company should also be Gas Safe Registered if they’re coming to look at a gas hob or similar, as this will give you the peace of mind that safety is their top priority. Checking how much experience a company has can also be useful as you may feel more comfortable with an established company than a new one.

Competitive prices and a great work ethic

Repairing an appliance can be costly depending on what’s broken, which is why getting an idea of prices prior to arranging for the repairs to be carried out is really beneficial. An appliance repair company with a great work ethic will also pledge to fix your appliance without new parts where possible and won’t suggest that you buy a new appliance unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Fantastic reviews

One of the best ways to ensure that you’re choosing the right appliance repair company is to check their customer reviews. Reading through great feedback is guaranteed to give you the confidence to contact a particular company and will give you an idea of the kind of work they carry out too.
8 Top Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Household Appliances

It is that time of year again where many of us are waiting for the warmer weather to arrive and starting to think about getting our indoor and outdoor spaces ready for the Spring/Summer. Some of us love a good Spring clean, if not a Summer, Autumn and Winter deep clean too!

We wanted to help by offering our Spring cleaning checklist of things to include when deep cleaning your household appliances, to help you maintain them and make them last longer. When we refer to household appliances, this could be any piece of machinery that you use in your home that is either integrated (built-in) such as a cooker or oven or a large free standing appliance such as a fridge, freezer or washing machine. There are also a few smaller white goods that are good to deep clean on a monthly basis such as your kettle and microwave, to help get the most out of them and also reduce the likelihood of them becoming damage from a build up of limescale, for example.

Cleaning the fridge or freezer

It is important to regularly clean the rubber seals around the edge of your fridge and freezer doors, to help extend the life of them and prevent wear and damage. All you need is some warm water and sop to gently clean the surfaces in and around the fridge and be sure to dry them off with a towel. You may also wish to defrost the freezer every now and then to help reduce the build up of ice which can stop you from closing the compartments or the door seal, but you must make sure you use up any perishable food items or have somewhere else to store them so they don’t become un-usable.

Cleaning the dishwasher

There are lots of reputable cleaning products available for keeping the inside of your dishwasher smelling fresh and to prevent the build up of limescale. You can use a rinse aid and must make sure that you remove a clean your drain filter each week to take out any dirt and food that may collect there, as well as ensuring that your dishwasher salt us regularly topped up to help keep your dishes clean.

Cleaning the toaster

The toaster can sometimes get a bit overlooked in a busy kitchen, but it is important to clean out the crumbs that can build up inside the toaster, on a regular basis. Many toasters have a tray which can be removed and you may also wish to tip it upside down or use a small gentle brush to shake out any bits that may be stuck inside – just make sure it is unplugged first. This will help your toaster work fully and prevent anything from burning inside which could potentially be a fire hazard.

Cleaning your microwave

A low-cost household favourite for cleaning home appliances is a simple combination of warm water and lemon juice. Lemon is naturally antibacterial and leaves a fresh scent, making it a nice natural cleaning solution. Put a bowl of water with lemon slices inside your microwave for up to 10 minutes (it may require less depending on how powerful our microwave is) and this will make the inside much easier to wipe down, to remove any build up of food mess.

Descaling the kettle

Using a limescale removal product such as a powder, mixed into water and left to soak overnight, can help to remove any build up of limescale in your kettle and make it as good as new. Following an overnight soak, you should make sure you rinse the kettle out and boil it a few times before using to make your next cup of tea, to ensure that all traces of your cleaning chemicals have been thoroughly removed. You can always do the same with your shower head and clean both at the same time, saving you a separate job later!

Maintaining your washing machine

We recently wrote another blog article about how to maintain your washing machine – check out that blog for more details.

Maintaining the tumble dryer

You should make sure that the lint filter is regularly emptied in your dryer, to prevent it from becoming blocked and causing your dryer to not operate at full capacity. You can remove the filter, and use a brush and cloth to remove any fluff and dust that may have got stuck in the filter.

Cleaning your cooker and oven

It is good practice to clean up spills on the stove top each time you use it, especially if you have a gas cooker as any spilled food can prevent the burners from igniting. You can use a toothbrush and a cloth to gently remove any mess that has become dried on and use soap and water to wipe down the surfaces. For the inside of the oven, you may wish to use a good oven cleaning product to help lift the burned-on residue from cooking, allow to soak for the allocated time depending on the product instructions, then wipe off with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth so not to scratch the surface of the oven.

Contact the appliance experts for advice

If you want to find out more about how to maintain your appliances or your require repairs for your washing machine, cooker, dryer, fridge, freezer or other ‘white goods’, you can speak to a knowledgeable member of our team by getting in touch via the website contact page or by calling us on 01722 711372.

Tips for Making Your Washing Machine Last Longer

We receive questions about how to maintain household appliances all the time, so we have put together a list of handy tips for looking after those all-important washing machines that we cannot live without!

Advice for Extending the Life of Your Washing Machine

The household appliances we use everyday is our homes are essential to a busy working or family life, but they can be expensive to buy and to replace should anything go wrong. From time to time, like any machinery, our appliances like the fridge, washing machine, tumble dryer and cooker or oven, need some time and love spent on them to help them stay in the best possible working order. These small maintenance jobs can make a huge difference to the life of your white goods, helping them live for longer and also helping to save you money in the long run.

Easy Steps for How to Maintain Your Washing Machine

1. Don’t overload the washing machine

Not only do your clothes need space to move around and to allow detergent to move between them, but overloading the washing machine can add extra weight and pressure to the transmission, motor and belt inside the machine, causing them to become damaged. By not filling the drum to the brim, you will ultimately make your machine last longer.

2. Check for limescale

Depending on where you live and how ‘hard’ your water is, you may find that your appliances and taps easily gather a build up of limescale which can seriously damage working parts. Every couple of months, you should be sure to check the pipes connected to your washing machine for any build up of muck or limescale which could affect drainage or erode the pipes and cause leaks. There are lots of good limescale removal products out there you can use to run through your machine on a regular basis and prevent any limescale from forming inside your machine. And whilst you are at it, you may as well descale the kettle and the shower head too!

3. Keep your washing machine clean!

Every few weeks, you should remove the detergent draw and clean it properly to remove any excess build up of soap and to prevent mould building in the draw. You should also remove and clean the washing machine filter ever 2-3 months. You can do this by checking your washing machine’s manual to identify where the filter is, removing it and then cleaning with a brush. You can also try soaking it in some hot water to remove any stubborn scale or dirt. It is also recommended that you check and clean the inside of the door, the seal around the inside of the door (removing any lint balls or miscellaneous items that get stuck there!) and the inside of the machine to ensure it is free of dirt and anything that may have escaped the odd trouser pocket.

Fixing Your Washing Machine

If you think your washing machine may be in need of further inspection by a professional, get in touch with our expert team at CB Domestics and we can help with everything from diagnosing a problem, to replacement parts where required.
